Pitching for Gartner
Gartner has asked me to present my research at their Enterprise Architecture Summit 2006. The conference will be held in London September 27 – 28. Here is a description of my pitch:
Government EA Programs In Action: From Vision to Implementation
Government EA programs come in different shapes and sizes. Countries around the world have approached EA differently and the results vary across public agencies. Based on research in the USA and Denmark, this session focuses on best practice strategies for EA implementation at national and agency levels. What value are governments getting from their enterprise architecture? How can governance be used to promote EA success? What are best practices for effective change management in the public sector?
I hope that a lot of you will be able to attend the conference. The program looks very exiting – and I look forward to meeting a lot of sceptically open-minded practitioners!

Billy the Kid – and his Slide Show…
Sometimes I feel like Billy the Kid in the wild, wild EA-west. Yesterday, I gave a talk to a group of Capgemini consultants here in Denmark and I was (again) the youngest person in the room. It sometimes feels like a lot of buzz, but the audience liked my pitch and I will keep shooting at the conventional IT wisdom among academics and practitioners. My slides can be found here.

Lecture Notes
The IT-University of Copenhagen has a great masters course about Enterprise Architecture. Yesterday, I was invited to talk about my research and my perspectives on government EA – you can find my lecture notes here.

Conference blogging
Last week I was invited to blog during the national Enterprise Architecture for Government conference in Århus, Denmark. The model was a “running commentary” where we blogged in real time. Unfortunately, the entries were not referenced much by the conference speakers or the audience (in real time at least), but it was fun. A dedicated blog was set up on OIO.dk – you can find all the entries here

Presentation in the Danish CIO Council
One of my good colleagues from IBM in the US recently asked me if I am still using my blog. I admit that my entries have been limited lately, but I have not stopped blogging. Since I returned to Denmark I have simply been piling higher and deeper (what PhDs must sometimes do :) and focusing on the Association of Enterprise Architects here in Denmark and internationally.
Today, I presented my US research findings in the Danish CIO council. The Danish Ministry of Science had invited me to talk about my observations studying the enterprise architecture programs in 12 public agencies in Washington DC and lay out my recommendations for Denmark. You can find my presentation here.

Presentation in the Architecture and Infrastructure Committee
I presented my preliminary research results in the US Architecture and Infrastructure Committee today. Dick Burk from OMB had invited me to talk about my observations studying the enterprise architecture programs in 12 public agencies here in Washington DC. You can find my presentation here.
One interesting observation is how the pendulum is swinging back and forth between top-down control to bottom-up initiatives in different countries working with eGovernment. OECD recently recommended that Denmark should make certain aspects of e-government mandatory (including our EA program!), while Dick Burk is now taking on a more collaborative approach in the US. I think we must realise that there is no silver bullet solution, and that context is an active player in the way eGovernment initiatives are being diffused and adopted in different countries at different times. Please feel free to post comments or drop me a mail.

Great Audience at Syracuse University
Because of a very active audience, my guest lecture today at the School of Information Studies Syracuse University went very well. I talked about the Danish approach to e-government and enterprise architecture. Denmark has been very successful when it comes to e-government the last couple of years, but our approach (especially to enterprise architecture) is very different form the business-driven American approach, and the students had a lot of good questions.
A particularly interesting discussion concerned the cultural and institutional environment that different governments work in and how that affects our approach to enterprise architecture. Having participated in the international ICA study group last year, I shared some of my experiences with EA initiatives in other countries like Canada, Korea and Sweden. And, as many of the Syracuse students also noted, the cultural and institutional environment in many ways determines the way we do enterprise architecture. E.g. the Danish consensus culture in a multiparty system is very different from the top-down management style necessary in the federal government of America, and I think we must acknowledge that when we build our national architecture programs. All in all, a great day with good input from the Syracuse master students!

Enterprise Architecture 2005 Conference Presentation
Today, I had the opportunity to present my review of the enterprise architecture for electronic healthcare record systems in Denmark at the Enterprise Architecture 2005 Conference. One of the scheduled presentations had been cancel and therefore the program comitee had invited the EA working group under the Danish Regions and me to "battle" about the reported content and the points made in the press lately. I had of course coordinated my comments with the working group beforehand, but we had a very lively discussion about the pros and cons of the report. My slides can be found here.

Conference program published
I have been invited to speak at a conference about the future of Danish municipalities held by TDC May 10. The conference program has just been published and I was very happy to see the speaking list. Here it is (in Danish):
Indledning v. Poul Victor Jensen, salgsdirektør, TDC Erhverv
Danmark med kurs mod fremtiden - seneste nyt fra Velfærdskommissionen v. Torben M. Andersen, formand for Velfærdskommissionen
Hvem er fremtidens borger? v. Sociolog Henrik Dahl
Fusioner og forandringsledelse - erfaringer fra den private sektor v. Jens Bjørnebo, it-driftschef i TrygVesta
Få styr på din it nu - anbefalinger til god proces for it i et helhedsperspektiv v. Kristian Hjort-Madsen
Hvordan kommer man igennem sammenlægningens faldgruber? v. Keld Hansen, vicekommunaldirektør, Løgumkloster kommune
I have not met Poul Victor Jensen, Poul Victor Jensen and Keld Hansen. But, Torben M. Andersen is perhaps Denmark’s leading economist and Henrik Dahl is one of my favourite Danish sociologists. Let’s see if I can keep up with them all...

PhD-presentation in the National Enterprise Architecture Committee
Thursday last week, I presented my PhD in the National Enterprise Architecture Committee. It was great to see the "family" again; The committee was established right before my PhD and therefore paved the way for my project. The members were positive towards my accomplishments so fare and they encouraged me to continue my case studies and the literature survey.
The presentation was scheduled to last half an hour, but due to a very lively discussion I almost presented for one hour. Below, I have highlighted some of the most important feedback:
1) The committee found the institutional coordination aspects in my PhD interesting - but they are very complex and difficult to generalize across government domains.
2) The sector concept in my first article must be defined better. A clear distinction must be made between the levels of government and sectors.
3) Interoperability is not one-dimensional. I have used the EIF in a couple of my articles and the committee encouraged me to work more with the three dimensions.
You can see my presentation ünder 'Public Speaking'

Conference presentation cancelled
Due to time pressure with my paper (cf. below), my parental leave of absence and preparations for my PhD-proposal, my presentation at the second annual Danish EA conference (Arkitektur for digital forvaltning) has been cancelled. My colleague, Christina Skov Petersen will now open the session on EA constraints in requirement specifications.
I will only attend the conference a couple of hours Monday to hear the minister’s talk and the panel on cross-institutional enterprise architecture collaboration. Hopefully, I will get to see many of my colleagues and friends in the Danish EA community there!
